Week 6 - Chapter 5 Data and Knowledge Management

 Data and Knowledge Management

Introduction

This week, data and knowledge management was discussed. The increasing dependence on digital information has made data and knowledge management a centre focus of modern organisations. The ability to effectively acquire, organise, store and analyse data is the lifeline of many organisations, for making informed decisions. This blurb is to discuss and explore challenges, solutions and key takeaways from the BetterMe case study and broader concepts found throughout the content of this week's study.

Main Reflection:

BetterMe’s; a leading behavioural healthcare app publisher, migrated to Amazon Web Services (AWS) for an easier data and knowledge management service. This migration suggests that the scalability and operational efficiency of a business can be significantly improved through cloud solutions. The adoption of AWS enables BetterMe and other companies to scale dynamically, optimise infrastructure costs, and improve application performance.

Considering data management through a broader lens emphasises the need for governance to address common challenges like data inconsistency, security, and accessibility. The relational database model provides structured and efficient data management, though it comes with its own complexities. The rise of Big Data (Big Data is a collection of data that is so large and complex that it is difficult to manage using traditional database management systems) (Rainer & Prince, 2021) has also introduced new opportunities and challenges, requiring advanced storage systems, processing and analytical techniques. Data warehouses and marts support, for example, consolidates and organises large datasets, whereas knowledge management systems enhance collaboration and innovation within organisations.

Challenges and questions:

1. Scalability and performance: How can the organisation ensure seamless scalability while maintaining cost efficiency and performance?
2. Data governance and security: What practices should organisations follow to ensure robust data governance and security?
3. Knowledge management utilisation: How can organisations encourage employees to actively contribute to and leverage knowledge management systems?
4. Big data handling: what could strategies’ could be implemented to process and analyse massive amounts of structured and unstructured data efficiently?

Conclusion:

Finally, through effective management of data and knowledge, companies have a cornerstone for modern business operations. Organisations must adopt scalable and secure solutions while ensuring their data governance strategies align with business goals. The BetterMe case study demonstrates a great example of how cloud technologies can address IT infrastructure and operational efficiency challenges. Furthermore, businesses should refine data strategies, leverage emerging technologies, and foster a culture of knowledge sharing to maintain a competitive edge in this modern digital era.
